Let Go and Haul: birthdays, butterflies, and the beauty of boring routines
Q1 2018 – week 8, Brooklyn
If you're new to this voyage, welcome! Yesterday I took a day off from this logbook's usual schedule because it was my birthday. The best thing about this day is it's also my sister Becky’s birthday! If you were here last week to read the hilarious Becky story, this is the woman you don't wanna mess with, haha! Happy birthday Becky ❤️
Journey: where we’re at
We're nearly at our first big milestone at Visioncamp: investor preview night at Betaworks. The app is coming together nicely but goddamn, those magical moments that make a product go from nice to “aha!” are so frustratingly elusive. I heard Tom Waits say in an interview once that writing songs is like catching butterflies. I feel like we have been trying to catch butterflies without enough time or nets. The only way I know how to deal with this is by trusting our creativity, we'll catch it. 🦋🦋🦋
Shout out to all my MIR friends who pointed me in the direction of resources when I needed them – especially Andreas. I've been spending a lot of time with Russell's Valence (x-axis) / Arousal (y-axis) model as it relates to music, which has been a fun thing to think about in terms of mapping audio and video :)
Journal: what I learned
What you practice is what you become. A year ago I was struggling to take care of myself under the weight of a complicated, hard job. This year I have a new, complicated, differently hard job! And I’ve become very good at taking care of myself. I’m no longer late all the time, triple booked, never having enough time to eat properly or exercise. It's amazing, I love it. I only got here through practice. Boring, daily, diligent practice. Hello 36!
Jams: what I’m into
This is the time of year in NYC I’m either listening to all the sunshine-filled music and/or regaining my sanity with a quick trip to LA (which I'm doing both of this week). I've been into this fun track by Astro Raw (one half of Lion Babe) based on one of my favorite tracks: Roy Ayers' Everybody Loves the Sunshine. This means I also need to tell you about Seu Jorge's cover (which I kinda think is better!) Three versions of sunshine! ☀️
